A fleet-metier based approach of the small scale fishing activity in the French West Indies ArchiMer
Guyader, Olivier; Reynal, Lionel; Demaneche, Sebastien; Berthou, Patrick; Daures, Fabienne.
The development of the ecosystemic approach for fisheries supposes to improve integrated analysis of fisheries by considering the biological as well as the socio-economic dimensions of the exploitation. A prerequisite for integrated analysis is the improvement in the knowledge of fleets structure, fleet evolution and allocation of fishing effort in the different fisheries. However, small scale fisheries are often characterized by a lack of knowledge on the vessel fishing activity. This paper first presents a data collection methodology recently applied in the French West (Guadeloupe and Martinique) for the follow up of the whole vessel population. Based on a statistical analysis of these data sets, the paper develops a fleet-metier matrix giving the...

Acoustic characterisation of pelagic fish aggregations around moored fish aggregating devices in Martinique (Lesser Antilles) ArchiMer
Doray, Mathieu; Josse, Erwan; Gervain, Paul; Reynal, Lionel; Chantrel, Josselin.
Sea cruises were conducted for 57 days over 16 months to characterise pelagic fish aggregations around 2 moored fish aggregating devices (FADs) in Martinique (Lesser Antilles). Echosounder surveys run in a star pattern were used in conjunction with obliquely beamed sonar observations. An echo-integration-by-shoal algorithm was implemented to isolate pelagic fish shoals from sound scattering layers and to compute mean morphometric, positional and density parameters. Tree regressions were used to select and classify pelagic fish Target Strengths (TS), with reference to their spatial and temporal characteristics. The main type of pelagic fish aggregation was a large sub-surface aggregation. It was observed during all daytime periods within a radius of 400 m...

Assessing the number of moored fishing aggregating devices through aerial surveys: A case study from Guadeloupe ArchiMer
Guyader, Olivier; Robert, Bauer; Reynal, Lionel.
Moored fish aggregating devices (MFADs) are increasingly being used in small-scale tropical fisheries to access pelagic fish species that are otherwise difficult to harvest in large numbers. Little attention has yet been paid to monitoring MFADs in coastal areas, however. This is most likely due to the small-scale nature of most fisheries that utilize them and the presumed lower impact of those fisheries on fish stocks and their ecosystems. In this paper, we examined the abundance and density of MFADs around Guadeloupe, using aerial line transect surveys. Estimated MFAD densities were found to be high compared with previously reported densities in this area, especially within the 22–45 km range offshore. We examine and discuss possible reasons for these...

Assessment of the contamination of marine fauna by chlordecone in Guadeloupe and Martinique (Lesser Antilles) ArchiMer
Dromard, Charlotte; Bodiguel, Xavier; Lemoine, Soazig; Bouchon-navaro, Yolande; Reynal, Lionel; Thouard, Emmanuel; Bouchon, Claude.
Chlordecone is an organochlorine pesticide, used in the Lesser Antilles from 1972 to 1993 to fight against a banana weevil. That molecule is very persistent in the natural environment and ends up in the sea with runoff waters. From 2003 to 2013, seven campaigns of samplings have been conducted to evaluate the level of contamination of fish, crustaceans, and mollusks. The present study is the first assessment and the first comparison of the concentrations of chlordecone between marine areas, taxonomic groups, and ecological factors like trophic groups or preferential habitat of fish species. The four most contaminated marine areas are located downstream the contaminated rivers and banana plantations. Crustaceans seemed to be more sensitive to the...

Blackfin tuna (Thunnus atlanticus) fishing around FADs in Martinique (French West Indies) ArchiMer
Taquet, Marc; Reynal, Lionel; Laurans, Martial; Lagin, Alain-sabin.
This paper examines the fishing of blackfin tuna (Thunnus atlanticus) around Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) in Martinique (French West Indies). It is based on the compared analysis of catches from monthly experimental fishing surveys and sampling of commercial landings. The data collected in these two different ways allowed comparison of blackfin tuna length frequencies. A large part of the commercial landings were made up of young immature tuna with a fork length of less than 40 cm, whereas the experimental longline catches were mainly made up of fish with a fork length ranging between 55 and 75 cm. We give evidence that these discrepancies were mostly due to the fishing technique used. Indeed, contrarily to the experimental surveys, Martinican fishermen...

ArchiMer
Bertrand, Jacques; Guyader, Olivier; Reynal, Lionel.
In the French West Indies islands, the transfer of chlordecone (kepone) from treated grounds towards the marine environment has been proved since the beginning of 2000s. In 2008, a maximal residue limit (MRL) was set at 20 µg / kg wet weight in fish and seafood, and therefore intensified the concern about the risks of high human exposure to the pesticide due to the consumption of contaminated marine products. To answer this concern, several sampling cruises were carried by public authorities and by Ifremer in order to analyze the contamination of the fish fauna around the Guadeloupe island. The data collected within these surveys improved our knowledge on the characteristics of the contamination of fish fauna and allowed to assess the distribution of this...

Chlordecone in the marine environment around the French West Indies: from measurement to pollution management decisions ArchiMer
Bertrand, Jacques; Bodiguel, Xavier; Abarnou, Alain; Reynal, Lionel; Bocquene, Gilles.
Chlordecone is a very persistent insecticide used in banana plantations of the French West Indies between 1972 and 1993. Chlordecone residues were found in inland water, in agricultural and freshwater products, and in marine organisms. This pollution has become of great concern in 2007. Therefore, a governmental action Plan was launched to better assess the pollution and to improve the consumer’s protection. Within this plan, 1048 samples from 69 different species of marine fishes and crustaceans were collected all around both the Guadeloupe and the Martinique Islands and analyzed. The results confirm the presence of chlordecone in marine organisms, with highly variable concentrations (from the detection limit to 1000 μg.kg-1). In 17.9 % of the samples,...

Laurans, Martial; Taquet, Marc; Reynal, Lionel; Lagin, Alain-sabin.
In recent years, the use of fads in Martinique has evolved from an experimental stage to a productive one. This transformation results in the pitching up of operational device park by the regional fishery committee. Nevertheless, this technical change in fishing practices is not implemented in a homogeneous way all around the island; some differences exist especially between the Atlantic and the Caribbean coasts. From surveys carried out during an annual cycle on two main landing sites, this study describes the pelagic fishing activity around fads and in the open sea. A comparison of fishing strategies adopted in different places as well as an analysis of the results obtained by the fishing units in terms of species (size of catches and daily yields) allow...

Dromard, Charlotte; Allenou, Jean-pierre; Bouchon-navaro, Yolande; Lemoine, Soizig; Thouard, Emmanuel; Reynal, Lionel; Bertrand, Jacques; Bouchon, Claude.

Guillou, Annie; Lagin, Alain-sabin; Lebeau, Alain; Priour, Daniel; Repecaud, Michel; Reynal, Lionel; Sacchi, Jacques; Taquet, Marc.
Since 1983, the research on the optimal conception of FADs in Martinique was particularly focused on the improvement of their resistance to different maritime or human aggressions. Following several experimentations made with different types of fads, the choice was brought on light devices anchored in 1 500 to 2 000 m depths and an experimental approach was conducted to identify the causes of loss of fads and to attempt to modelize their hydrodynamic behaviour with relation to the sea conditions. Three mathematical models are used to simulate the fad behaviour under current action and swell, and to estimate the forces exerted on each part of the device. The results of this study are presented. The fad design used nowadays for the development of pelagic...

Development and characterization of microsatellite markers for blackfin tuna (Thunnus atlanticus) with the use of Illumina paired-end sequencing ArchiMer
Antoni, Luca; Luque, Patricia L.; Naghshpour, Kaylie; Reynal, Lionel; Saillant, Eric.
Twenty homologous microsatellite markers, or simple sequence repeats (SSRs), were developed for blackfin tuna (Thunnus atlanticus) through the use of a direct Seq-to-SSR approach. The number of alleles per locus ranged between 5 and 26, and the expected heterozygosity ranged between 0.640 and 0.969. Three loci displayed significant departure from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium expectations, likely reflecting occurrence of null alleles. Another locus showed consecutive alleles that differed by one base pair only. Consequently, this locus may be prone to elevated rates of scoring errors. The remaining 16 loci will be valuable for studies in conservation genetics of blackfin tuna.

Battaglia, Andre; Guillou, Alain; Lorance, Pascal; Reynal, Lionel.

Bertrand, Jacques; Abarnou, Alain; Bocquene, Gilles; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Reynal, Lionel.
During the years 1972-1993, kepone a persistent pesticide has been used in the banana fields of the French West Indies (Martinique and Guadeloupe) to content a weevil. A slow desorption of the molecule from soil induces its transfer to the sea through the rivers from leaching and erosion. This study intended to take stock on the contamination by kepone of the fishery species around the islands fifteen years after the kepone ban. Furthermore other chemical pollutants were sought in fish and shellfish around the Martinique island. The results confirmed persistence of marine fauna contamination by kepone, mainly in the alluvium areas in front of polluted rivers. They shown also that this contamination may spread more widely but with fast decreasing through...

Different means contributing to anchored FAD's fishing selectivity in the Lesser Antilles ArchiMer
Reynal, Lionel; Guyader, Olivier; Pau, Cedric; Mathieu, Heloise; Dromer, Clement.
In order to improve the sustainable development of FADs fishing, it is important to reduce the capture of juveniles or species that need a decrease in fishing effort, temporarily or definitively. Through previous statistics data coming from commercial fishing trips and new experimental fishing trips, we compared different gears and techniques selectivity for the species and the size of the capture around FADs. We also compared different type of bait used, the best hours to fish for better productivity and to target adults. Finally we look at the influence of the FAD distance from shore. We observed that fishers’ strategies have a critical influence on FADs setting and targeted species. The further the FAD is deployed and the better yield the fisherman...

The pathogenic virus Panulirus argus virus 1 (PaV1) was first discovered in Caribbean spiny lobsters Panulirus argus from the Florida Keys (USA) in 1999 and has since been reported in Belize, Mexico, and Cuba; its distribution in the wider Caribbean is unknown. We collected tissue samples from adult spiny lobsters from 30 locations in 14 countries bordering the Caribbean Sea and used molecular diagnostics to assay for the presence of PaV1. PaV1 occurred primarily in the northern areas of the Caribbean, where its prevalence was highest. The virus was not found in lobsters from the southeastern Caribbean, and its prevalence was lowest in the southwestern Caribbean. DNA sequence analysis was performed on a fragment of the viral DNA to examine the genetic...

Do FADs influence the geographical distribution of dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus)? ArchiMer
Taquet, Marc; Reynal, Lionel; Laurans, Martial.
For most fisheries, increasing the local production of pelagic fish is the main objective of Fish Aggregating Devices (fads). This does not rule out the existence of a larger-scale impact, especially on the migratory behaviour of fish. The analysis of data collected during 25 experimental fishing surveys around Martinique between 1995 and 1997 has led to the hypothesis that fads influence the migratory behaviour of young dolphinfish. Unlike recent studies of dolphinfish migration in the Caribbean, which tend to show an annual migration pattern with a seasonal passage through the French West Indies, the experimental fishing surveys done over more than a year on a monthly basis on a single cohort, show that the migratory pattern of part of the regional stock...

Reynal, Lionel; Guyader, Olivier; Demaneche, Sebastien; Le Meur, Chloe; Lespagnol, Patrick.
Blue marlin is fished in the French Antilles around Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs). This fishery commenced in late 1985 and the fishing fleet reached its full potential in the second half of the 2000s. A fisheries information system (SIH), implemented from 2008, enables good estimation of catches and effort around FADs. The data on catch estimates of blue marlin and associated fishing effort are presented herein, as well as the methods used to assess them. From these and a survey of fishing masters, it is possible to reconstitute, year by year, the fishing fleet working around FADs in the French Antilles and to reconstitute a historical series of blue marlin landing.
